Have you been experiencing chronic pain for six months or more without relief from traditional pain management therapies such as neurostimulation, surgery, pain medications, nerve blocks, or other treatments? The Ramos Center is pleased to announce that we will soon offer a new and innovative procedure called Dorsal Root Ganglion Spinal Cord Stimulation.
What is Dorsal Root Ganglion Spinal Cord Stimulation (DRG)?
To understand DRG stimulation, it is important to have knowledge of spinal anatomy and physiology. The Dorsal Root Ganglia are located within the epidural space just off the spinal cord and contain a cluster of sensory nerve cells. Each body part has a corresponding nerve root that connects to the spinal cord and manages communication to and from the brain. The DRG links the nerve roots to the spinal cord, giving it direct access to the messages transmitted back and forth.
By applying electrical stimulation to the DRG, pain signals can be interrupted and distorted before reaching the brain.
What to Expect During the DRG Stimulation Procedure?
The outpatient procedure will be carried out at the Ambulatory Surgery Center. All patients will receive light anesthesia (twilight anesthesia) to help them stay relaxed and comfortable. The procedure will be performed in two stages, each taking an hour and a half.
First Stage: The patient will undergo a one-week trial to determine the effectiveness of the procedure.
Second Stage: If the trial is successful, the patient will receive a permanent implant.
Patient Reported Success
According to various studies, patients reported a significant reduction in pain and were able to reduce or eliminate oral medication after undergoing DRG stimulation. Many patients also reported an improvement in mood scores and an ability to perform daily activities with greater ease after 12 months post-op. DRG stimulation offers targeted pain relief, and 81% of patients reported that they were pleased with the outcome.
