What is Sciatica?

Dealing with sciatica can be a challenging experience for patients, but the positive news is that it’s often a temporary issue. Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, which runs down one or both legs from the lower back. This discomfort is typically caused by a herniated disk or bone spur in the spine that presses on the nerve, leading to pain that originates in the spine and travels down the back of the leg. Sciatica generally affects one side of the body, and while the pain can be intense, most cases can be resolved with non-operative treatments within a few weeks.

How is sciatica treated?

Sciatica can be treated with various approaches depending on the severity of the symptoms. For some patients, self-care measures can be effective in relieving discomfort. However, if the pain is severe, a healthcare professional may prescribe pain medication, such as an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxant, prescription narcotic, or other medication.

Other treatment options that can help manage or eliminate ongoing pain include physical therapy, which involves exercises to improve flexibility, strengthen back muscles, and reduce discomfort. Additionally, a patient may benefit from steroid (corticosteroid) injections that can suppress inflammation and pain.
